"Sultan" sets up palace in Malacca

PETALING JAYA: Self-proclaimed "Sultan" of Malacca, Raja Noor Jan Shah Raja Tuah, has set up his own "palace" in Malacca, with a team of officials, to meet people he calls his "loyal subjects".

His secretary Azri Sapian said the "palace" at Bukit Punggor was a gift from the people.

"There could not have been a better choice than a 70-year-old traditional Malacca house," he said yesterday.

Property businessman Raja Noor Jan Shah, 48, claims to be a direct descendant of Sultan Mahmud Shah and the 44th Sultan of Malacca.

He held an "investiture ceremony" with 500 guests in Kuala Lumpur last month.

His claim to the throne, however, has been dismissed by Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam.

PostHeaderIcon Cartoons show how IT is in Asia

By VIVIENNE PAL

SEE Yew Lee still seems a little dazed although it has been a year since he was selected by the Malaysian Cartoonists' Association (Pekartun) to take part in the 9th Asian Cartoon Exhibition.

The exhibition aims to introduce Asian society and culture by way of a medium that is accessible and understandable to all – cartoons.

Themed “How’s IT in Asia?”, the annual showcase of one-frame cartoons is jointly organised by The Japan Foundation and The National Library of Malaysia, and is currently on display at the National Library.

“I was a little surprised that of all the other cartoonists, they selected me to represent the country in this exhibition,” See said during the launch on Nov 10.

One of See’s works called ‘Charm of Internet.’
“I didn't expect to be noticed and felt somewhat inadequate; my favourite topic is politics and I've only been working on my children's comic series (Ge Mei Lia) since its first publication three years ago,” he added.

The art director of United Publishing House and an editorial cartoonist with the Chinese Sin Chew Daily, the 40-year-old joins seven other leading cartoonists from China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, the Philippines and Thailand to depict how information technology (IT) is embraced in Asia.

“Our aim is to promote mutual understanding among societies in Asia,” said The Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur director Shimoyama Masaya.

See with some of the cartoons that he submitted for the exhibition.
“The art works by each artist are geared towards nurturing a better understanding of Asia’s way of life, with the cartoons depicting each culture’s dealings with modernity and globalisation in a humorous light.

“Hopefully, it can encourage each society to confront the various issues related to IT,” he explained.

According to National Library director-general Dr Wan Ali Wan Mamat, the event helps create better awareness of other cultures besides strengthening ties and facilitating information among the Asian countries involved.

Expect to be entertained and bemused by how the artists have sought to portray the development of IT in the social, business, educational and industrial aspects of society, in a collection of 80 satirical and humorous caricatures.

“How’s IT in Asia?” will be on display at the National Library until Nov 30.

PostHeaderIcon Local animators just not making enough money

SINGAPORE: Financing is probably one of the biggest dilemmas faced by animators in Malaysia, said animation and filmmaking veteran Hassan Muthalib.
With about 40 years of experience in the business, Hassan said local broadcasting houses pay too little for each half-hour episode or cartoon.
According to him, the RM40,000 currently paid by RTM was “too low” as, ideally, a good quality cartoon should rake in RM250,000 per half-hour episode.
n_p23hassan CARTOON FLICK: Hassan posing beside a poster of ‘Silat Legenda’, Malaysia’s first full-length animated feature, which he directed. “I hear that even then, RTM wants to reduce the amount,” said Hassan, who is best known for the Sang Kancil series of animated short films in the 1980s.
The part-time lecturer who teaches at One Academy in Kuala Lumpur said Malaysia’s animation Industry was at the crossroads compared with already established key players like Japan and Korea.
Hassan said Malaysian animators should focus more on being storytellers rather than emphasising too much on technology and the use of software.
Only when animators understood the important rule of having a good plot with strong characters could they reach international standards, he said.
“They need to understand the principle of a good structured narration.
“Cartoons have a very long shelf life and when they are good they can sell forever, like Popeye,” Hassan added yesterday at Shangri-La Hotel here.
Hassan, who is also president of the Animation Society of Malaysia, was a speaker at a conference entitled The Bigger Picture: Asia Animation in Development.
The conference was part of the four-day Asia Media Festival 2005, which began on Wednesday.
Hassan said one good example of a locally-made animation that was doing well overseas was Johan, the Young Scientist produced by animation studio Inspidea Sdn Bhd’s.
Its managing director Andrew Ooi said the cartoon was currently being aired in Brunei, Indonesia, the Middle East, Estonia and Portugal.
Ooi, who participated in the Asia Animation Super Pitch of the convention, said the company was currently in talks with local broadcasting houses to buy the content.
And if the price was right, Malaysians would get to watch it, he added.

PostHeaderIcon The Star Online: Reggie's colourful characters

SUBANG JAYA: Cartoonist Reggie Lee has created five characters which will be featured as mascots at this year’s Pesta Ekspo Pulau Pinang.

It is the first time that a cartoonist has been commissioned to design mascots for the annual one-month-long celebration.

Lee, 50, said he received a call from Pesta organising chairman Datuk Ahmad Fuad Ismail about two months ago.

“When he conveyed the task, I was thrilled, being an anak Pulau Pinang,” said Lee, who also draws cartoons for The Star.

PROUD PAPA: Reggie who created the five cartoon mascots for this year’s Pesta Ekspo Pulau Pinang showing the colourful main logo for the event on his laptop.
“I was given the freedom to design the mascots. The only requirement was that I inject the festival colours into my work.”

Lee said he took two months to come up with the designs and logos featured on billboards and postcards.

“Initially, I suggested four mascots to represent the major races in the country but later, another one was added to represent East Malaysia.”

Lee said the human-sized mascots were named Pie (a Malay), Elin (a Kadazan), Singh (a Punjabi), Tan (a Chinese) and Anju (an Indian). Together, the first letters of their names form the word pesta.

He added that the mascots would be unveiled at the Pesta site in Sungai Nibong tomorrow.

The theme for this year’s Pesta is Colourful Penang, Come Join Us.

Apart from local exhibitors, the fair has also attracted exhibitors from Indonesia, China, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Myanmar.

Erra and Yusry admit to split

BY RIZAL JOHAN

KUALA LUMPUR: Actress Erra Fazira and KRU group member Yusry have confirmed that they are facing marital problems, ending months of speculation.

They have been staying apart for the last couple of months.

Previously, they had denied facing any marital problems.

'It's true, we have been staying separately for some months but (our problems) have nothing to do with the escalating rumours that a third party is involved,' Erra told the media yesterday.

Yusry, who was seated next to Erra, said media speculation about their troubled marriage made reconciliation difficult.

'We are in marriage counselling right now and I hope we will be able to work things out because I'm still very much in love with her,' said Yusry.

He then turned to Erra and asked: 'Are you still in love with me?'

'Yes,' said Erra, smiling.

The couple said they had to set the record straight about their marriage due to the wild rumours.

'We need the time and space to work things out between us, so I hope all the fans and other parties understand that we are going through a tough time,' said Yusry, who was in tears.

When asked what problems the couple were facing, Erra said: 'We are having personal problems but I'm not going to elaborate because I think it's a common problem married couples face.

'When we decided to stay apart, we never thought it would last so long.

'And when word got out that our marriage was in trouble and all the rumours started spreading, that made it even more difficult for us.'

Added Yusry: 'We are not blaming anyone over the rumours but now that people know about our situation, I think it's time the rumours stopped to let us concentrate on saving our marriage.'

PostHeaderIcon Kegilaan animasi hasilkan Fakulti Kartun

Kegilaan animasi hasilkan Fakulti Kartun
